Running and Knee Pain Explained August 25, 2009
Posted by jamieatlas in denver, fitness, running.Tags: denver, denver running, knee hurts run, knee pain, running

If you have been running the beautiful paths that Denver CO has to offer and have been experiencing knee pain then you are in good company. Let’s face it, every runner experiences some overuse or misalignment injury at sometime in their career. We often misunderstand the symptom as the cause. New science is showing us something different.
When you examine and understand the role of the knee in running, then you understand that when it hurts in the knee, the knee is actually one of the last places you should look to find the cause (rather than simply treat the symptom).

Run Lassie! Get help! And maybe get me asnack bar and a magazine - but not Cosmo, ok? I already read that one.
Here’s a great testimonial from one of my North Denver small group running conditioning classes:
As a runner who seemed to be injured a good majority of the time, I had come to accept that that would always be the case if I wanted to continue to run.
My mode of operation would be to run until the knees or the ITB flared up badly enough that I would have to get it treated by numerous practitioners who help with running injuries (acupuncturists, chiropractors, etc…). I joined a friend of mine for one of Jamie’s boot camps, immediately liked it and decided to stick with it. After a couple weeks of working with Jamie, I noticed I was feeling stronger and stronger on each run….and surprisingly, my chronic knee and ITB pain had disappeared.
I had read that strength training provides a huge benefit to counteract the imbalances in runners and therefore helps prevent injury, but I had never worked with someone who had such a good understanding of the body and its mechanics.
Jamie is extremely knowledgeable in which areas I need to target to build strength so the chronic pain goes away (and stays away). Strength training classes at most gyms were at best mediocre. They were repetitive and were not customized for my specific needs, therefore I was not seeing any results.
I am so thankful to have been able to benefit from Jamie’s expertise. Because of it, I am able to run more often and with more confidence than I have in many, many years!! Thanks Jamie!
Thanks Lauren for that nice post and thanks for trusting me with something as important as your running style. It’s my pleasure to have been able to help you.

Click this link to understand how the knee really works
http://jamieatlas.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/knee-pain-often-comes-from-foot-problems-an-explanation/
Now you understand the role of other parts of the body, take the time to think about which might be more misaligned or overwhelmed.
If the feet are flat, the shins are likely rotated internally which puts pressure on the knee.
If you have flat feet, you may have tight adductors.
If the foot has high arches then the shins are likely externally rotated which (suprise) puts pressure on the knee again.
If you have high arches, you may have tight glute muscles.
If your knee is stuck in the middle between the foot and the hip rotating against each other then the knee will send our pain signals. If we address the knee without considering how the foot and hip are working then we are ignoring the major players.
For an accurate analysis you can see a physical therapist – I personally recommend graduates of the Gray Institute GIFT Program (of which I am a graduate!) for someone that will have true respect for the human body and its intrinsic complexity.

Red lights around your knees may be painful, but they are excellent for not getting hit by cars at night
Do you run in Denver and have knee pain? I guarantee I can significantly reduce your knee pain within 4 weeks of treatment or your money back. Email me at

TODAY Shows Doctor discounts TIME magazine article August 24, 2009

With a big sigh of relief, I sat down to watch the TODAY show this morning talk about the new TIME magazine article, the doctor (Nancy Snyderman) says that exercise matters – a whole bunch.

The Today Show Team.
Dr Nancy Snyderman makes a crucial mistake though by saying that ‘at the end of the day, its calories in and calories out’. In truth, it’s much more than that. Don’t believe me? Listen to the doctor contradict herself in this interview:
Click the link below to hear what the doctor has to say:
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/32538206#32538206
At 2:53 minute point she does make an interesting point – chewing your food and savoring it helps you lose weight. She also goes on to explain why diet soda (with zero calories) can actually sabotage your efforts and make you crave carbs and salty foods…
Which of itself proves that losing weight is more than just calories in calories out! The ‘calorie equation’ is in truth a very small part of a successful weight loss/maintenance strategy! (am I right? Am I taking crazy pills here?)
Truth is, whether you are trying to lose weight or maintaining weight, the TIME article she references (see link below to read the article) seems to minimize exercise as part of a weight loss program.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20090806/hl_time/08599191485700
This article does little to explain the health benefits associated with exercse. Such as? Well, lets start with living longer:

If you are counting calories in your daily diet, I would strongly encourage you to read this post:

It explains why calories in equals anything but calories out. And gives you a new direction within which to find success.

Best Way To Lose Weight: Personal Trainers vs Nutritionists pt2 August 23, 2009

Best Way To Lose Weight: Personal Trainers vs Nutritionists pt2:
Thankfully there is a force at play that overcomes any misinformation this article may have laid down. The power of smart personal trainers (and nutritionists) to make their protest about this article and be heard online. There more than a few people out there that recognize the narrowly focused jounalism that is focusing on a small aspect of the many benefits of exercise.

and the truth shall set you free!
A couple of smartly written, insightful blog posts were written online regarding this TIME article – here’s a few:
Written by one of the staff from Network Australia (a pioneer and international leader in the world of fitness & exercise):
http://www.fitnessnetwork.com.au/BlogRetrieve.aspx?BlogID=182&PostID=43933
Another by the ACE personal trainer of the year, Jonathon Ross:
http://blogs.discovery.com/jonathan_ross/2009/08/defenseofexercise.html
This article looks deeper into the actual research upon which the article was based while referencing many other studies that have shown best results from a combined approach.
http://www.womentalksports.com/items/view/45971

- healthy foods have always been and will always be a major PART (emphasis: PART) of any healthy living plan
Another discussion that includes a talk about ‘ghrelin’ otherwise known as ‘the hunger hormone’
Of course, without a representative from the Nutritionist side of the discussion I might be presenting a one-sided perspective on the argument – not that the author of the TIME article in question seemed to have a problem with that
This article by ‘dietsinreview’ did a good job of breaking apart the statements made in the TIME article, talking about misinformed journalists, but also making a distinction between ‘weight loss’ and ‘weight maintenance’
http://www.dietsinreview.com/diet_column/08/experts-debunk-recent-weight-loss-exercise-myth/
While coming from a different direction, this post probably does the best job of respecting how very complex we are and how any one study is just a review of what happened to the majority of people, not necessarily to each individual with respect to their own lifestyle/chemistry/physiology/psychology:
http://nutritionresearchcenter.org/healthnews/what-works-for-losing-weight/
My thoughts on the debate of the TIME article:
If this article gets people to get more aware of what they eat, then it has served a great purpose. However, if it causes one person to stop exercising because they draw the conclusion that it holds little or no benefit, then the author has done a disservice to their profession.
Of course, a little sensationistic title doesn’t hurt to get people reading about an article – sometimes I have written a title or two designed to intrigue people:
The bottom line is this:
exercise in moderation and eat in moderation, but remember that you are changing every day, and with that your needs and wants will change. For optimal health, you need lifestyle eating habits (and exercise) that are fitted to your individual needs.
So which helps give you better results? A personal trainer or a nutritionist?

personal trainers and nutritionists dancing together in harmony... such a beautiful thing
The winner is – a personal trainer that works with a nutritionist.
If you are a nutritionist, partner up with a trainer. Trainers do the same. The two serve different roles and should help each other and understand each other.
If you are in need of losing weight, find a trainer who knows and understands nutrition – or a nutritionist who will give you a solid exercise plan that you can follow. Or both.
With obesity and lifestyle related disease at an all time high, it’s time we realized that the sum of the whole is greater than the individual parts.
Starting with each and every one of us. Both industry professionals and customers.
Yours in health,
Jamie Atlas

Best Way To Lose Weight: Personal Trainers vs Nutritionists pt1 August 23, 2009

If you wanted to lose weight and had to choose one, which would be the best way: A personal trainer or a nutritionist?
Recently TIME Magazine released an article titled “The Myth about Exercise” gives question to whether you need a trainer – especially since (as intimated by the article) exercise causes increased appetite and decreased energy output following exercise.

If you are thinking about eating cupcakes as big as your head, that might be your problem right there.
Needless to say, the article caused a stir amongst my personal training clients. Some of them were outraged at the article, some were confused. It sparked conversation within my small group classes from participants – had they been wasting their time exercising? Had this flock of sweaty faithful been putting themselves through this pain for nothing?
What exercise should be vs what this TIME article states that it is:
1: A training session should not ‘kill’ you.
It should leave you worked but energized. For too long trainers have given hard sessions to people as an attempt to show value. True, extremely vicious sessions that cause clients to approach ‘near vomit’ are suitable for certain members of the population (eg high level athletes and anyone who would make fun of me when I used to drive a mini-van). A high level athlete may burn an amazing amount of calories (the very lean Michael Phelps took in an amazing 12,000 calories a day while training for the Beijing Olympics) while a beginning couch potato certainly does not have the same capacity to burn energy. If a workout leaves you lying on the floor
2: We must train our clients for more than just aesthetic benefits.
It is my belief that anyone in a role that helps people move has a responsibility to help them not only look better but to live their life better as well. Our clients should be able to use that body to play, live, work and do all the things they want to do. A workout program should not only burn calories (if that is their goal) but also should burn down boundaries that hold that participant back from living the fullest life they can. Our roles as health and fitness professionals must be more than just aesthetic – otherwise we place ourselves in the same role as infomercials and diet pills (and you know you don’t want that!)

As an industry, we must always forge onwards to a higher understanding. Or stand on pillars and look ominous. I choose the latter.
3: Dont overpromise and underdeliver.
A training session should also not promise amazing results without at least some attention to diet. We all know that many of our clients may already have washboard abs – they just have some laundry to take care of. How they take care of that laundry (read: excess energy) can be in a variety of ways – however exercise alone is a much longer path compared to the potential growth that can come from a multi-tiered approach.
Thankfully there is a force at play that overcomes any misinformation this article may have laid down…..

When I think of Nutrition, I try to imagine what is a cross between what would give the best results and what is realistic for real people.
I could ask you to live in a small cave by the sea but who wants to do that? (except maybe those old hermits that already live there – they might not take kindly to sharing, either!)
The following articles include information that gives you (A) the tools to control your own weight, but also (B) the understanding of why ‘one diet fits all’ does really anything but.

NUTRITION:
MENTAL PREPARATION FOR MEANINGFUL SUCCESS
Before you start anything, you need to understand what you want to accomplish and that the people on Worlds Biggest Loser have no life other than losing weight. You have a life. Adjust your expectations accordingly:
http://jamieatlas.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/results-not-typical-setting-realistic-weight-loss-goals/
Another post that explains that the best way to measure your improvement of health and fitness does not come from the numbers on a scale.
http://jamieatlas.wordpress.com/2008/06/25/your-bathroom-scale-must-be-destroyed/
A more honest look at what it takes to combat the social pressure of having weight to lose and feeling judgment when eating in public areas:
http://jamieatlas.wordpress.com/2009/05/20/your-weight-loss-mindset-pt-1-fk-you-for-judging-me/

Want to lose weight? Is your medical doctor REALLY the best quealified person to give advice on nutrition?
NUTRITION:
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
An explanation why Calories in DOES NOT equal Calories out:

understanding your body and how it responds to diets can be very confusing - but it doesn't have to be.
Even I enjoy a dessert or forbidden fruit from time to time. Read my strategy to make sure I eat it guilt free and that it makes no impact on my waistline.
http://jamieatlas.wordpress.com/2008/06/15/the-personal-trainer-that-loves-dessert-and-wine/
Because you have an individual chemistry – you can discover what foods to use – you just need to listen to the messages your body is sending you
The article everyone keeps asking for – how to get rid of the ‘loose bits’ at the back of the arm. This explains how diet and lifestyle come hand in hand for certain physical alterations.

...and the truth shall set you free!
TIME Says Exercise is Pointless. Leading Personal Trainer Agrees With Them… Kinda August 10, 2009

TIME didn’t exactly say that exercise is pointless , but they did say that for losing weight it can actually be counterproductive. It might surprise you, but I wholeheartedly agree with the article. And I have been training people hard for over 16 years!

Lose 15 pounds and all self-respect in only 4 weeks!
Here’s why:
I think that lots of people think they need to drive themselves into the ground with reckless abandon and not a thought to their stress, nutrition and lifestyle habits. There is a right way and a wrong way to exercise (and a right reason and a wrong reason to pick certain exercises to do).
‘Human Being’ vs ‘Human Living’
If you want to live your life to its potential then you need to prepare your body for the amazing things the world has to offer. If you have been exercising you are better prepared for activities life might throw your way. Plus, once you have gotten rid of the laundry covering your washboard stomach, you might want to consider what it might look like underneath? Ever see a runner with great legs and flabby upper arms? Need I say more?

Before, I used to have to run everywhere! Now thanks to my new 'treadmillbike', I just ...ermmm. ahhh...
It is my opinion that exercise (while burning some calories) if taught and conducted the right way leaves a person in an uplifted state of mind and energized to go through their day and make good decisions in all areas of their life. It is my job to match that workout to your ability/energy on the day so you leave in that ‘goal state’.
Confession: I don’t always get it right. But that ‘goal state’ for my clients is always my directive in every session I teach.
Truth is, this TIME article doesn’t really delve deep enough into some of the terrible habits and misconceptions the fitness industry has placed upon society.
If I see another infomercial with the words ‘results not typical’ at the bottom of the screen I may just march down to Suzanne Somers house and see if her ThighMaster fits anywhere else than conveniently under the bed… Phew.. Sorry, where was I?
Read here to see what TIME magazine has to say (thanks to morning class member Greg Burns for putting me onto this article).
