What if you don’t have time to go workout

or

just plain aren’t comfortable at your local fitness center.

The fitness industry is killing itself to get to the people that are already healthy and working out on a regular basis.  If you have ever been at home or on the road and wanted to improve your fitness but didn’t want to go to the gym and get a personal trainer or join a small group class – then you have a new solution on the market.

NEWSFLASH:  From April 26th to May 5th 2009 get a free orientation and your first webcam to webcam personal training session from $5.99 – $9.99!

But it will be years before you see this in the mainstream media.  Here’s why change is needed.

The fitness industry has let you down.  Badly.

See! Even big guys do these exercises! Now if I could just get him to start wearing a shirt to the gym...

The fitness industry has let you down - it also wants you to believe that shirts are optional at your local fitness center.

Only 16% of the US population belong to a gym.

And I don’t blame them.  But the unequivocal truth is that we could all benefit from fitness and exercise.

But if you have ever wanted to workout or just start a physical health & fitness program but have said that you didn’t have the time, then there is a new generation of personal training that you need to take a closer look at.

The next evolution of personal training will happen face to face – via webcam

What's wrong with this picture?

The next time you get ready to go to your gym, think about the time you will spend:

  1. getting ready to leave the house
  2. driving to the gym
  3. checking in at the front desk
  4. waiting for machines
  5. making obligatory chit chat with your locker friends as you leave
  6. driving back home

Alternatively..

You get dressed, go to your computer, click a button to activate your webcam then dial in to a conference line and your trainer is ready at the other end waiting for you.

How much time would you save by training via webcam vs traveling to a gym?

who would think that this technological development could hold the secret to a brand new you!

Who would have thought that this webcam could hold the secret to a brand new you!

Of course if you are a stay at home mom or a traveling businessperson then you know how hard it can be to even find 30 minutes to spare.

Now when I explain this to people, they sometimes feel a bit wary – and understandably so.

Thankfully I am yet to have even one person do a webcam to webcam 1-1 or small group personal training session (of the many I have taught) who didn’t 100% love it & think it was a great workout.

So before you discount the concept of webcam to webcam personal training, consider this:

1: How much more likely would you be to workout if you had a trainer who could visit your house whenever you needed them to (worldwide trainers means worldwide access to training means train anytime)

2: If you stepped back from your computer so your trainer could see most of your body, what do you get from your personal trainer that they could not communicate to you verbally?

3: What if you could have a personal trainer train you at home or your hotel room in a way that was from a certified personal trainer that had been hand picked and personally trained by yours truly?

Let me show you a resource that is now devoted to exactly this style of personal training.

I have dedicated the past two years of my life to developing this resource and am proud to present it to you:

Jillian Michaels Butchers a Kettlebell Exercise Demonstration April 10, 2009

Jillian Michaels from the tv show worlds biggest loser has started to reach a crucial point.  Her publicity machine is working overtime right now, she is featured in exercise tv videos, has a world of product out there with her name on it and is the trainer that the general public knows as the name to go to.. the expert you can trust.

But Houston… we have a problem.

Ever watched a sporting movie and the actor they cast actually cannot play that sport?  Think old Disney movies or “Teen Wolf”.  I could hardly watch that movie without feeling sick every time Michael j fox took a foul shot.  Its amazing how bad these actors are at basketball (well, in general really).  Or maybe I’m spoiled coming off all this March Madness.

trivia tip: the movie ‘teen wolf’ features the wave – the first movie to do so.. now you know who to thank (or blame)

So now that you have a frame of reference, allow me to segue seamlessly to the Kettlebell demo that rocked the world:

If you knew kettlebells then you would know that this is actually incorrect form

If you knew kettlebells then you would know that this is actually incorrect form (watch the wrist)

Being tough and professional, I know she can take it.   So I am going to let her know she should have done her homework ahead of time and not decided to ‘wing it’ like she did on worlds biggest loser the other night.

Because Jillian did something wrong.  She squandered a great opportunity.

Amazing article here by the talented and brutally honest Sarah Rippel of “fitprosarah” that reveals the full story about Jillian:

http://fitprosarah.wordpress.com/2009/04/09/wanna-learn-kettlebells-dont-watch-jillian/

More links that expose her being generally panned by the Kettlebell community (I don’t necessarily agree with everything they say, but needless to say, these guys are worked up into a tizzy!:

http://fullthrottleathletics.com/blog/frisco-kettlebell-instructor-laughs-at-jillian-the-biggest-loser-trainer/

http://bradrants.com/blog/biggest-losers-jillian-michaels-fails-miserably/

So what did Jillian Michaels do wrong?

She gave the Kettlebell world a chance at fame and butchered it.

She had an opportunity to show the world how to use kettlebells and she decided to go the ‘Jillian method’ rather than the method taught across the world by the masters of the kettlebell.

So why is that so bad?  Well, because people will go to their kettlebell instructors who will tell them to do it differently than Jillian, people get confused and retreat back to their safe happy cardio-land.

I don’t often mention kettlebells here, and that is in part because I don’t use them much, part because my knowledge of kettlebells is limited especially in comparison to some of the experts on the internet today.

But I respect the kettlebell knowledge base enough to not pretend that I can tell the world how to use them.

It’s funny, because I don’t get passionate about football, but when Worlds Biggest Loser is on, I have been known to jump up and down and throw cushions at the television screen out of pure anger and dismay.

I know they get results, that is great – but at what risk?  Sometimes I think of extreme weight loss as trying to ride a motorcycle up the side of a very steep hill.

motorcyclehillclimb

if you lose a contact... just keep going!

If you make it to the top of your weight loss goal in high gear and high volume training without slipping/getting injured/damaging internal organs, then you look great and nobody recognizes you due to the sudden change…

but if you slip or take a wrong step… then you end up another injured battered rider at the bottom of the hill.

I much prefer taking my clients on a slow donkey ride the long way up. Safer, more secure, and you learn more about yourself on the way up.

You know you will get there, you just got to have the patience to keep at it!

Whatever you do, make sure you give the machine (your body) a checkup before you try to take it up any mountain, regardless of the path you choose.

A faulty wheel alignment (or tight hips, low back or poorly rotating spine) might not show itself in the first push, but over time your imbalances become impossible to work through.

Unfortunately as humans we have a ‘more is better’ mentality so we get to what I call a ROB point where “the risks outweigh the benefits”.

So kudos to you Sarah for writing such a great article, Jillian lets hope you do your research and a bit of off screen practice/expert consulting next time and to everyone watching biggest loser – think about what you might be able to achieve if you had 3 months of doing nothing but focusing on losing weight.

Now, since you actually have a job and need to pay the bills/look after your kids/go to school/find a cure for cancer….  snap yourself back to reality and try starting on something more realistic…  And don’t beat yourself up if you dont lose 20 pounds a week like those guys.

Yours in health,

Jamie Atlas

Why Personal Trainers Love (but also HATE) Marisa Miller April 8, 2009

Marisa Miller is probably one of the examples of what keeps many personal trainers in business:

Marisa sometimes has to go to extremes to get away from the paparazzi

Marisa sometimes has to go to extremes to get away from the paparazzi

The never-ending quest to look like someone that others look up to (or just be someone that others look at for an awkwardly long period of time even though their girlfriend is jabbing them in the ribs).

The truth is, personal trainers probably wouldn’t have the lucrative trade they have if it weren’t for girls like Marisa Miller.  Sure, she has a sexy butt, beautiful face and amazing curves.

It would be completely acceptable if it weren’t for the way her beauty is warped into a tool by which personal trainers build their trade.

Here’s how the formula often goes in our younger, more impressionable years:

Girl sees other girl get attention

Girl realizes that hotness is (A) relative to attention from boys and (B)envy of other girls.

Girl creates a vision of what she might want to look like – of which this vision is influenced by (A) the televised and print media, (B) the images that other boys look at and (C) an innocence of understanding the change that might be possible without genetic or surgical alteration.

Girl proceeds to visit personal trainer once or repeatedly, then irrelevant of professional advice but preferring that of shape, cosmo & other tabloid-oriented magazines begins to overexercise, skip meals and generally punish herself repeatedly for not looking like the girl in the picture (even though on rare occasion she might actually get there!)

Here’s where things get really scary:

What do the following supermodels all have in common.

Marisa Miller looks great here - what does she have in common with the other two models? Stay tuned!

Marisa Miller looks great here - what does she have in common with the other two models? Stay tuned!

This girl is equally pretty in her own way

This girl has a much more natural beauty about her...

And yet another beauty poses. Did you guess it yet?

Did you guess it yet?

So now let me ask you this:

Is it just me or do these three photos of Marisa Miller all make her look completely different than each other?  Maybe the lips didnt get fixed, but man oh man tell me there wasnt some serious photoshop magic going on.

But I have to be honest, she is very thin and is blessed with maintaining her ‘upper torso circumference’.  But without the photo magic she just looks… well, kinda thin:

marisa miller natural shot

So why do personal trainers love her?  Because she drives women crazy wanting to look like her (even if the pictures they are looking at aren’t necessarily an accurate representation of her)

But why do these personal trainers also hate her?

Because the same women come in asking to look like her – which 90% takes more work than they are willing to do.  It also sometimes is not genetically possible – there are always exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking, the rule is a rule for a reason.

marisa miller -photoshop

Those guys are good, huh!

I will save you the anguish and tell you that the butt on the left is real.  I just wanted you to see how good these guys can be:

And then papa bear said... this Marisa Picture is photoshopped juuuust riiight.

And then papa bear said... this Marisa Picture is photoshopped juuuust riiight.

Want to know what I want?  I want someone to come in to see me and when I say ‘what are you looking for’?

My dream client would walk in and say this:

“I am looking to be as fit and healthy as I can possibly be”

That might not mean being a size ‘zero’

It might not be running marathons

It might mean not getting sixpack abs (they aren’t necessarily healthy at a certain point)

But it would be striving to reach your potential – your own personal best and not anybody elses.

Because the truth be told, maybe Marisa could look better… But it doesnt matter if you can look as good (or better) than Marisa.  It matters that you can look and feel and be healthier and fitter than yourself right now at this moment in time.

Think about that…  What would it look like if you were to just focus on you – not any sisters or brothers or friends or role models or sports heroes or supermodels or non-existent airbrushed figments of some photographers imagination.

What if you compared yourself… to you?

What if you took the you right now as a starting point and tried to improve upon that?

With dedication and devotion, you might find that you gain not only change in a positive direction, but a feeling that can only be described as pride in ones self.

Instead of shame for not looking like Marisa Miller.
